WebOct 15, 2020 · There is a difference between taking a long thin divot (ie shallow AoA, long flat spot) and digging a 1"+ deep trench (ie steep angle of attack, short flat spot). There is a middle ground between picker and digger, which is where elite ball strikers typically reside. Being too steep or too shallow both lead to inconsistency.

I know each type of golfer and it's not a problem for the picker or sweeper, and I've been told by OEM reps that this theory is bs (these are OEM reps that know about the different shafts they offer in their irons).

WebI can tell you that being a picker is an advantage in wet conditions. Guys who hit down on the ball tend to hit them fat in wet conditions unless they catch it perfect. When the ball gets in half buried lies it is better to be able to hit down on it.

You might not be flipping but you need very good timing to strike the ball exactly at the bottom of the arc without the club head passing the hands. I spent so much time playing Bermuda that I think that cemented my tendency to dig. Nicklaus changed from a digger to a semi-picker as grasses improved.
